Anyone else have that one song that always reminds you of your characters? Or a song that brings you right back to writing your story? Or how about a song sung by the one and only person you can imagine playing your main character in the movie?
Well, if you’re like me, you’ve got a song for it all. Here is my writing playlist, with a little insight into each song.
“To Be Loved” by Westlife
The melody from a lullaby, There’s nothing real, That I wouldn’t steal, To be loved by you
Not only does this beautiful love song simply bring me back to 2013 when I created my characters and wrote my first novel, but the lyrics describe my character’s love story perfectly, right down to the melody.
“My Love” by Westlife
Yes, there are two Westlife songs on my list, but there has to be, okay? Practically all I listened to while writing my first novel was Westlife. But this song in particular has a little extra meaning. This song details the band’s desire to go back to those skies of blue and fields of green of Ireland, which is exactly how one of my main characters feels throughout the story.
“Someone To Love” by David Archuleta
This song has always been a bit ambiguous to me, able to have a few different meanings. But if I’m relating it to one of my main characters, I’d say lyrics like these: Didn’t wanna get it wrong, And the fear don’t need to wait, But I had to learn to love, Something had to change – are exactly how he feels after meeting his other half and ultimately coming out of the closet and living his truth with him.
“Jessie’s Girl” – Rick Springfield
I included this song solely because I have always dreamed of one of my characters being played by Rick Springfield, basically since the day I created him. This character is calm, cool, and carefree and I think Rick would play him effortlessly.
“Infinity” by AJR
This song has a very subtle mention in one of my books, mainly because it’s alluded to that AJR are a certain character’s favorite band. Even though this character is born and raised in Ireland, this New York City-based band is her teenage favorite.
“I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran ft. Justin Bieber
This song was an unexpected one. It just kind of came to me one day when this song came on the radio. There’s a point in one of my books, after an endless amount of devastation, that my characters finally get their happy ending and the story ends with an inevitable celebration full of music and dancing. And what song do they dance to? It’s this one. Cause I don’t care when I’m with my baby, yeah, All the bad things disappear – it’s as if this song chose the story. And every single time it comes on the radio, I’m transported to that celebration with my characters.
Now, I can’t just go on and on about all these songs without hearing what yours are! Comment below and let me know what’s on your writing playlist!
